Well folks Oscar night is over and as we predicted, Jennifer Hudson and Forest Whitaker were big winners in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor categories respectively. Eddie Murphy lost out in the Best Supporting Actor category, possibly because of the controversy surrounding his new movie Norbit which is said to have affected the voting.

Brilliant brand new single from R&B singer Joe from his new album Who Is Joe out in April. This is the 3rd single I have heard so far from the album after 'Where You At' and 'It Wont End' and I'm not sure why it is taking so long for the album to drop. Sometimes record label politics just gets in the way of good music. By he time the album comes out in April, if its not pushed back again,most people would have heard the songs and that could negatively impact reord sales. Most of the album production is by the Tim & Bob and this track is no exception.

The video is also brilliant and stars Blair Underwood, whose is increasingly carving out a new career appearing in music videos.

This is the cover art to Beyonce new DeLuxe edtion of B'Day which contains four new tracks including one with Shakira. Hey, now why did I think deluxe editions were only for succesful albums for example Usher's Confessions,Alicia Keys' Songs in A Minor and Mariah Carey's Emancipation of Mimi? This album sold nowhere near the sales of those albums. In my opinion,the four new tracks add very little value to the reissue.

Never one to want to be confined to just the one box Akon is back with this new single from his Konvicted album.This is a very different sounding track to anything you're likely to hear on the charts at the moment. I love the songs African/Carribean/Spanish influences and think the video is amazing too.

Justin Timberlake-What Goes Around Comes Around
This is Justin's 3rd single from his FutureSex/LoveSounds album. Hard to believe because it feels like the album has been out for years. Starring actress Scarlett Johansson the video is okay but the track has very strong overtones of Cry Me A River from his debut album.Listening to the song I can't help hinking that this should have been one of the many Cry Me A River remixes.

50 Cent disses Cam'ron
50 cent has put out a video dissing Camron. Unfortunately the video has such strong image of gun violence, ammunition and negativitity that I'm not going to post it here. It's one thing putting out a diss record but let it start and end on the record (eg Jay-Z/Nas diss records). Im not not a big fan of either 50 or Camron but i just feel there better ways the video could have been shot and some cuts did not need to be included especially those images of guns and other ammunition.Check out my girl at StraightOuttaNYC to view the video.

Jermaine Dupri, one of the industry's most consistently successful top-charted producers and songwriters, has been appointed president of Island Records Urban Music, a new division of the Island Def Jam Music Group, it was announced today by Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. As part of the arrangement, Mr. Dupri will oversee Island's entire urban music operation. In addition, he will produce artists on the IDJ roster, as well as provide his production services to the entire Universal Music Group family of labels.

Today we celebrate the birth of Robert Nesta Marley, known to most as Bob Marley. Bob as born on February 6 1945 in the rural parish of St Ann's, in Jamaica this year would have marked Bob's 62nd birthday. He left home at 14 to pursue a music career in Kingston becoming the pupil, of a local singer, a devout Rastafarian and later forming the Wailing Wailers with two friends and fellow musicians Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

In 1972 the Wailing Wailers (later known simply as the Wailers) came to the attention of Chris Blackwell of Island Records who signed them to his label. This was a risky move because t the time reggae bands were never signed to big labels
and when the Wailers released their first album Catch a Fire, that was to be the first time a reggae band ever put out an album. Most reggae releases at the time were either singles or compilations.

The following year 1973, Catch a Fire was followed by Burnin' which included the hits

1974 saw the release of Natty Dread.The album contained the group's massive hit

As great as Marley's fame had grown outside of Jamaica, at home he was viewed as a figure of almost mystical proportions, a poet and prophet whose every word had the nation's collective ear. His power was perceived as a threat in some quarters, and on December 3, 1976 he was wounded in an assassination attempt; the ordeal forced Marley to leave Jamaica for over a year.

1977's Exodus was his biggest record to date, generating the hits "Jamming, " "Waiting in Vain" and "One
Love/People Get Ready"; This remains one of the most important reggae albums of all time. It remained in the British charts for 56 weeks straight. The single "Jamming" is the inspiration behind the 1980 songMasterbaster (Jammin') by Stevie Wonder

Kaya released in 1978was another smash, highlighted by the gorgeous "Is This Love" and "Satisfy My Soul." It was an album of mainly love songs and debuted in the UK album charts at number 4. In 1979, the militant Survival was released and a tour of the United States and Europe followed.During the European leg of the tour Marley broke festival

1980 loomed as Marley's biggest year yet. He was officially invited by the Government of the newly-liberated Zimbabwe to play at the country's first

A tour of the U.S. with Stevie Wonder was announced but while jogging in New York's Central Park Bob collapsed, and it was discovered he suffered from cancer which had spread to his brain, lungs and liver. A posthumous album Confrontation was released in 1983 and included the big hit Buffalo Soldier His posthumous compilation album Legend (1984) is the best-selling reggae album ever, with sales of more than 12 million copies.

BOB MARLEY 2007 CELEBRATIONS IN JAMAICA
On Feb. 10, four of Bob's sons -– Stephen, Ky-mani, Damian "Junior Gong" and Julian –- will play the Smile Jamaica concert in Bob's birthplace and burial site, Nine Miles, St. Ann. The show is a nod to the legendary peace concert of the same name that took place in Kingston on Dec. 5, 1976, only two days after an assassination attempt on Marley.

Leading up to that event, there was plenty going on around Bob's native land. On the eve of Bob's birthday on Feb. 5, the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston hosted a three-hour symposium called "Welcome to Jamrock: Reggae Music's Influence on Tourism and the Economy."

And for Bob Marley Day on Feb. 6, there were school tours of Tuff Gong International, the renowned record label, studio and shop, an evening "Soul Shake Down Party" at the museum and a Nyabinghi Rasta event at the Culture Yard in Trench Town in Kingston.

On Feb. 7 at the museum, there will be a movie night while the Culture Yard will host a night of dance hall reggae music. And on Feb. 8 at the Senate Building, Dr. Leachim Semaj of the University of the West Indies will deliver an evening lecture entitled, "Bob Marley: National Hero or National Icon."

On US television VH1 will present a special Bob Marley edition of the "Island Soul" program, hosted by Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Stephen Marley in honor of Bob's birthday. It premieres Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. ET. Lookout for it!

I'm not sure I like this song. After Ja Rule and 50,the world was not ready to hear another rapper singing or trying to sing and especially not Did-he? Keyshia Cole, really put her heart and soul into this and without her, the song wouldn't have amounted to anything. I really feel it should've been 'Keyshia featuring Did-he?' and not the other way round...after all, she did the hard work. Video's good though.

Will Smith was honored with the Modern Master Award an honor that says he is a master of his craft at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Smith is nominated for a best-actor Oscar for his performance in "The Pursuit of Happyness" as a struggling single father in San Francisco who beats the odds and goes from rags to riches.

Asked what it takes to be a good father, Smith said patience, compassion and commitment. He's the father of three in real life, including 7-year-old Jaden, who co-stars in the movie.

"You've got to really want to be a good father," he told reporters on the red carpet outside the Arlington Theatre on Saturday night.

Tom Cruise presented the festival's Modern Master Award to Smith.

Sky Sports reports that:

Serena Williams claimed the Australian Open title as she proved too powerful for Maria Sharapova.
The unseeded American won 6-1 6-2 in just 63 minutes in Melbourne and win her eighth Grand Slam event.

The 25-year-old made a mockery of her world ranking of 81 going into the tournament with an assured display of power tennis that overwhelmed the Russian.

This makes three Australian Open titles having previously won in 2003 and 2005."This one's right up there with the top," Williams, who dedicated the win to her sister Yetunde, who died in 2003, said.

"I was driven. This morning I woke up and felt different, I felt good".

"It was an awesome win because I had so many critics, so many people talking bad and saying negative things and saying I wasn't fit when I felt that I was really fit and could last three sets and two-and-a-half or three hours no worries."

Brandy Causes Fatal Accident

R&B singing sensation Brandy was involved in a fatal accident last month, and it appears to be her fault.

TMZ reports:

It happened at 10:30 AM on December 30, 2006 on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Brandy was driving her 2007 Land Rover at 65 mph and did not notice that cars in front of her had slowed considerably. We're told Brandy's vehicle struck a 2005 Toyota. The Toyota then hit a 1989 Toyota. The 2005 Toyota then slid sideways and hit the center divider. As the 2005 Toyota came to a halt, it was struck by a 1988 Acura.

In a statement to TMZ from Brandy's publicist, Courtney Barnes, the singer confirmed her involement in a fatal crash: Brandy was involved in a car accident December 30, 2006 in Los Angeles where there was a fatality. She wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased. Brandy asks that you respect the privacy of everyone involved at this time.

We're told the driver of the 2005 Toyota, Awatef Aboudihaj, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in critical condition and she died the next day. Aboudihaj, a 38-year-old married mother of one, was a Los Angeles resident.

Brandy was not injured. The driver of the Acura suffered moderate injuries.

Brandy was not arrested and there is no evidence drugs or alcohol were involved.

Police are doing a mechanical investigation of the cars involved in the accident to determine if there was a malfunction.[Source: TMZ]

The movie, Dreamgilrls leads the nominations list with 8 nominations including Best Supporting Actor (Edddie Murphy),Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson), and Best Song (Listen) but loses out on Best Picture and Best Actress(Looks like Beyonce has lost out again on this;I can foresee Matthew Knowles having a fit over this one!)

Other nominees are Will Smith (In Persuit of Happyness)and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) for the Best Actor, Djimon Honsou (Blood Diamonds) for Best Supporting Actor.

Hey, I wonder if Bey will now start putting her dreams of winning an Oscar in a box to the left, to the left?!

Beyonce had what looked like another bad hair day tonight. This was spotted by photographers earlier this evening at the UK premiere of Dreamgirls in London. Closer inspection of her mane reveals that the glue she used to keep her wig in place appeared to be peeling.

Hot New UK Releases: 22nd January 2007

I haven't done my weekly Hot Releases feature since the start of the year because, quite frankly there haven't been any. Like most industries, the first quarter of every year and sepecially the month of January is normally very poor in sales and so record execs get really nervous about releasing any new material. Since the start of the year they have just been putting out compilation after compilation and nothing much else.

The only album of note out tomorrow is Pretty Ricky's Late Night Special

Its an album written and produced almost enirely by the group and features their new hot single On the Hotline and the sensual Sticky & Slow. The album reflects the groups growth and maturity and showcases their diversity and versatility. Now, I'm not a big fan of these guys but I think for a second album they have really done well and should gain a wider fan base with the album.
